Sunday the 4th was additions for Wizard of Oz and Andrew received a call-back for Monday. I had to run over to Deer River to sign a paper before work, the roads were not great as I noticed an accident on the east side of town. Also swung by AutoZone to replace my windshield wipers. I need to start putting my wipers up when there is ice accumulation, I think I’m damaging them with the ice scraper.
We had a dive team meeting after work on Tuesday. Rich was appointed Captain by the Sheriff - two Lieutenants still need to be appointed. We discussed a light salvage class that will be taught by Dive Rescue International. We need to locate a vehicle that we can use and secure the use of a deep pool during the summer. It’s hard to find a pool then because they drain them for maintenance.
On Thursday, I attended a defensive tactics class at the community center in Cohasset. We practiced a couple of takedown techniques and used the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) grounded Americana shoulder lock. We also practiced Shrimping; a defensive technique used in grappling to escape from a bottom position. Taking a subject down and engaging in ground techniques seemed to be the main focus with added importance to stay on your back, never let yourself get flipped.
The instructor showed us the following YouTube clips for scenarios related to our training; “I’m Jesus!" — Police Capture "Possessed" Man on Camera, Bodycam Shows Man Attacking Officer in Youngstown Police Department’s lobby, Wild Standoff Between Jacked Veteran And 8 Cops, and When a Hockey Player Becomes a Cop.
After the Defensive tactics class was over, we had lunch and then continued training with an EMR refresher class. Lecture, CPR (30&2), deployment and use of tourniquet (loaded, use dispatch to mark time, ambidextrous access, and access to more than one- use yours for you), I don’t have a current EMR certification so I only obtained a current CPR recertification. I will have to complete the EMR soon.
We found out late Thursday evening that Andrew is casted as Scarecrow in Concord Theatricals Wizard of Oz! 🌪️ Opening night will be on March 27th.
On Saturday morning, the dive team assembled at the dive barn and we did a quick inventory of everyone’s dive kit. We are missing some items and need to do a better job of keeping track of our equipment. We then headed over to Robert J. Elkington Middle School Swimming Pool and I completed the annual IADRS Watermanship Test. I completed the 500-yard swim in 15:51:57 minutes, my best time so far. 🏊♂️
